Fouled Spark Plug

A plug that is fouled by carbon deposits will have soft dry black carbon on the electrodes and the ceramic insulator. Possible causes are too cold a plug, overly-rich air/fuel mixture, or faulty ignition wires or coils.

Wet black deposits indicate oil in the cylinder, which can be caused by worn rings or leaking valve seals.
