ECU+ Tuning and Data Logging Package
Incredible tuning technology meets outstanding value in the new ECU+. The ECU+ is a state-of-the-art signal processor and data logger that allows you to tune the fuel and timing maps of your DSM, record and play back performance data using a laptop or palm device, and analyze before-and-after results using a PC.
Summary of features
- Fuel tuning through mass air sensor (MAS) offset
- Timing control through crank/cam angle sensor offset
- Complete ECU datalogging at 25 samples/second
- MAF translation allowing the use of GM airflow sensors
- Complete analysis software including virtual drag race and dyno modes
- Solenoid control for future boost control capabilities
- OBD-II-aware hardware for future OBD-II code reading and clearing
- Knock sensing
- NO EPROM ECU needed!
The ECU+ Control Unit
The core of the ECU+ package is the ECU+ control unit. Just slightly larger than a pack of cigarettes, it contains a dedicated digital signal processor (DSP) chip, which is at your disposal to adjust fuel up to 50% richer or leaner, and adjust timing up to 15 degrees of advance or retard. You have a total of 129 load points to choose from, and the ECU+ interpolates between points to build a smooth map over the entire RPM range.
The ECU+ Software
Setup and adjustment of your fuel and timing is simple. You can program the ECU+ through any Palm device, or using a desktop or laptop PC (Windows only). User-friendly software for both makes the adjustments simple and intuitive.
Powerful Palm software allows for full adjustment and control of the ECU+ control unit, plus complete data logging at 25 samples per second. When you next hotsync the Palm device with your PC, the software automatically uploads your datalogging files for analysis on your PC.
The Windows software lets you program the ECU+ control unit, plus it features a full suite of logging and analysis tools. The most powerful of these are the drag race and dyno features.
Drag race mode allows you to make a quarter mile acceleration run in your car and analyze it to produce a time slip like you would get at a drag strip. The program produces 0-60 time, 1/8 mile ET and trap speed, and 1/4 mile ET and trap speed.
Dyno mode takes acceleration data and tells you how much horsepower the car is producing. In addition to that, it allows you to OVERLAY two data sets, so you can compare horsepower figures. Now there's no need to find an AWD dyno to do your tuning; just pick a stretch of empty road -- we recommend a closed private road, for purposes of staying legal -- and make a second-gear acceleration run. Make some fuel and/or timing changes, go back and run that same stretch of road again. Stop your data recording, and you can analyze how much power your changes made.
ECU+ Specifications
The ECU+ monitors and logs the following data streams:
- MAF frequency
- Timing advance
- Front O2 sensor voltage
- Rear O2 sensor voltage
- Injector pulse width
- Injector duty cycle
- Throttle position
- Vehicle speed
- RPM
- Air temperature
- Coolant temperature
- Knock sensor voltage
- Air/fuel ratio (when used with a wideband oxygen sensor package, like the PLX M-300)
It also has three spare five-volt inputs, plus an input pre-calibrated for a boost (MAP) sensor, available separately.
As an extra benefit, the ECU+ produces its own simulated rear O2 sensor output, which can be useful if you've got a different catalytic coverter setup than the car came with.
Improvements!
New for 2005, the ECU+ now boasts finer rpm resolution (250 rpm increments), MAF translation, four independent solenoid drivers, four available analog outputs, improved software, knock sensing, and more!
Future improvements:
The ECU+ flexible hardware platform allows the device to be upgraded in the future just through new software. Stay tuned for more details on future upgrades.
There are other tuning devices (like the Super AFC) that offer fuel map adjustment. And some offer fuel and timing, but cost significantly more. But we don't know of any tuning package that has all of the features of the ECU+ for anywhere CLOSE to this price.
The package includes the ECU+ control unit, software CD-ROM containing both laptop and Palm software, complete instructions (on the CD-ROM), RS-232 serial cable, and null-modem connector. Requires a PC (we find a laptop most convenient); a Palm device is useful but not required. If your PC does not have a serial port, you'll need a serial-to-USB adapter, which can be found at most computer stores. Palm connectivity requires a serial (RS-232) interface. USB-only Palms (like Tungsten E) will NOT work at this time.
Note: As with any engine management hardware, it is possible to damage or destroy your engine by mis-use of this device. Running too much timing or too lean of a fuel mixture can cause catastrophic detonation. Use this product at your own risk. Neither Mach V Motorsports nor ECU+ is responsible for damage incurred during the use of this product.
ECU+ for DSM comes in two versions. The wire-it-yourself version for 90-99 turbo DSM requires soldering into your factory ECU wiring, or a patch harness. The plug-and-play version for 2G turbo DSM means no additional wiring required. Just unplug your ECU, plug the ECU+ Plug-and-Play assembly into it, and go!
Note that the DSM version of the ECU+ is NOT compatible with the Lancer Evolution.
