90-94 1.8 Liter SOHC

This motor is the runt of the litter. Saddled with a less-than-great SOHC head, the 1.8-liter motor squeezes out only 93 horsepower. That's almost 40 less than the non-turbo DOHC 2.0 4G63, and let's not even discuss the turbo motor.

There are almost no performance parts made for the 1.8. Most 2.0 non-turbo intakes will fit the 1.8 car fine. But otherwise, the 1.8 motor cannot use most of the performance parts made for the 2.0.

The 2.0 NT motor, or the turbo 2.0, can swap into a 1.8 car just fine. But figure $2,000 to $5,000 for the swap. In most cases, that's more cash than it takes to just buy a turbo AWD 90-91 model outright. So we recommend not swapping motors into a 1.8 car; it's a losing financial proposition.

The 1.8 cars share brakes and suspension with other 90-94 DSM's, so most non-motor upgrades will fit up.
